I'm puzzled at the email response of me offering to be a helper in the Japan trip.
What's up with everyone? Please lah, I'm the one paying 2000 bucks to go and be helper, why everyone eye red red, talk so much? Not as if you paying for me and I going to Japan FOC.
If Hansiang can choose not to go, why can't I choose to go as helper?

it's not fair to judge that these folks are "red eye"...
i think many just feel that Genus really doesnt need an experienced alumni player; one who can contribute much more as a player, going to Japan as a mere 'helper' -a role which many would agree, can be easily "dispensable" - if all the players going take a personal repsonisbility for their equipment.
Some may argue it's a personal choice, and yes, the fact that the trip is not FREE makes it a compelling argument. But if everything can be left to personal choice, then heck, let's give all who ARE going to japan have the choice to pick and choose whether they want to perform, or better still, which songs they WANT to perform, and hey, maybe if they didnt feel like it on the day, why not choose to go sightseeing instead of playing ya?
Where are we to draw the line?
I think it's down to a matter of "what this Japan trip is about". If it's about representing Genus to put up a good show in Japan, then all who CHOOSES to PAY 2000 bucks to go, I salute your dedication to genus/music, and envy your good opportunity (which i sadly am missing this time round due to work commitments). But please be responsible and perform to the best of your abilities. If not, maybe it's better not to go this time.

Actually i dont see what's so wrong about owls being a helper. No doubt he can contribute more as a player. No doubt he will be taking up some other's place as a helper.
But think of this, firstly, this trip is definitely not about leaving to personal choice and it is unlikely that u can go sightseeing alone according to the itinerary cos u dont know the language and place there, and unless u are going to plan ur own stay and stuff, which is exp, there is little room for negiotation in terms of the places that are planned for us to go.
Whats more, u are paying so much money just to go to japan, not mention the extra costs incur if u are really intending to go and sightsee on ur own. And more likely, u will not be subsidised at all if u do that.
I think its fair that given the sum that we paying to go there, Owls decision is justified. Firstly, he is contributing to genus in some way. secondly, it's the comm that suggested the helper thing and its really down to personally choice even though there might be some clash in objectives. Thirdly, nobody is taking up the helper role and thus does not conflict with the objectives yet (still have 5 more days). Fourth, we all know about owls spat with the one, why not make things easier.
If its the fuss of Owls being able to contribute more musically than other areas, i still think its up to personal choice and it is justifiable for this choice due to the above reasons. Personally i wouldn't see it as an issue. Its your money, its your choice, the comm has open up this choice, as long as u are contributing in the trip i feel its ok. Even if u can find 2 pple willing to pay to be a helper, i would still say, why not open up a 3rd helper place.
Just my personal point of view, definitely nothing personal.
Like that can I volunteer to be a helper too? I have a useful skill - can video!

hmm.. everyone's entitled to their own opinion lah hor.. at the end of the day, it's up to the Organising Comm to decide on what's ok and what's not.
haha.. if the Comm were to decide the fielding a small group (like 5 players) is just as good, then rest can all become helpers. Why not ya? :)

Anyone can choose to become a helper, yes, Wai you are included. If you genuinely feel that you can contribute more as a helper than a player, then why not?
Obviously ridiculous situations like 5 players and 20 helpers are eliminated. Where to draw the line for the numbers? Whoever is planning the trip, I guess.
Everyone should be going in a role out of their own choice or their best choice. There are some grey areas involved but it's really up to the organising people to decide.

even if i managed to get special permission to take some days leave during my probation, there's no chance of going for 2 weeks lah...
